The film that I have created is based on my president that was an advert for a Samsung Galaxy III. It shows how the application is used for a user to get around the kelburn campus.

DSDN 112 - Unexpected Gatorade experience

Unexpected Gatorade experience

My object that I chose to design is an unexpected Gatorade experience. The senses that are incorporated into the design are, sight, smell, and touch interaction. The unexpected Gatorade experience is that when the user goes to say tip some of the Gatorade into a cup and none comes out, Instead an entirely different object comes out such as blue M&Ms. The feeling that the user would touch on would be disappointment for a second then the disappointment turning into something like excitement.

The way the interactive object is caused to work is the bottle has been sliced in half with a holding chamber for the M&Ms. The holding chamber has been attached to the bottom of the piece where the lid screws onto. This was the best way as it would show the Gatorade traveling up to the lid but not being able to escape the bottle. The chamber where the M&Ms are being held is quite long so that when the user looks at it briefly the M&Ms are not visible.

How to use the object is simply by unscrewing the lid of the bottle and either going to try and pour the drink into your mouth or into a cup. A cup would end up working better as several users wouldn’t want to try to drink from the same bottle.

DSDN 104 - Final 81 iterations

Final 81 iterations

The final composition and product of the 81 iterations that i have created using 3Ds Max. The final layout of the iterations was inspired by the solar system and the paths of what planets orbit. The final came out a a bit darker then expected as I had used 'Print size assistant' but found it works well still showing the collision of the shadows and dominance of the iterations with how the colours and contrast has been used.

DSDN 112 - Storyboard

Storyboard

Project write up
The idea that I am exploring and working on for the senses project is what I call unexpected disappointment.  The senses that are being used are sight and smell with interaction of the object. The idea of my project is to have a bottle like ‘Gatorade’ half full of what looks like liquid but really a solid that has been coloured to look as if it’s the bottles liquid. When the user opens and takes off the lid it will have the same smell as the Gatorade but when the bottle is tilted to its side to be taken a sip of what looks like the liquid won’t move and will give that feel of disappointment.
Something that could replace the liquid would be jelly or even silicon plastic that has been coloured to match the colour of the drink. The smell of the drink could be done many ways but one of ways that can work effectively is having the sent on some fabric underneath the lid on the inside of the bottle.  The weight will be one of the hard aspects of the project as it will have to be match near to the real thing. That is why the solids will need to be explored immensely to best fit the requirement.

DSDN 101 - Design standpoint

Design standpoint

My design standpoint on media design is about bringing ideas to life and having nothing to stop them from doing so. There is a wide range of Medias out there to help ideas flourish and bring them into reality. Pencils, paints, markers, etc. Are all parts of everyday use but programs such as Photoshop, flash, illustrator, cinema 4d, after effects, and many more are all out there to be used for mans use for creativity, to really bring ideas to life using a range of media.

I tried showing the process of an idea transitioning between different medias, as the creator has an idea making his attempt of bringing it to life.  The idea is able to be drawn with it beginning to come alive as it walks off the page and becomes a 3d form then walking into the computer screen.

The images below show the process an idea the creator has gone through with first drawing the idea then beginning to bring it to life by digitally designing it on the computer with a range of colours and almost bringing it into the world. The final image is of the idea the creator has expanded on processing through different elements of media to have an end result of the character being brought to life in a 3d game.
With the developing software over the years to come the ideas that creators are able to think up are only going to develop being able to display what has been created in using different medias giving their end result as if it part of the real world.

Here is a quote showing that you can doing anything you like with an idea, there are no boundaries or limits. "Art is the only place you can do what you like. That's freedom." - Paula Rego.

St James theatre

Known as the best theatre in New Zealand, ‘His Majisty’ or best known as St James theatre is situated in Wellington on Courtney place. The architect of the beautiful rococo and neo-classical revival designed theatre was Henry Eli White who had built what was one of his most famous theatres out of his one hundred and thirty. It was built in 1912 and he believed it was one to out live the rest.

When designing St James theatre White believed a classic design was what would be best suited for the austere climate of wellington. Baroque opulence was favoured more on the inside much like the English theatres. Beautiful plaster work was created on the inside by William Leslie with plaster masks, full figures, cupids, ornate cornices and picked out gold decorative work and ‘the faintest flush of rose madder’. The brother of Rose Leslie was used as a model for William to create the plaster work of the cherubs.

The balcony frontage has the typical cheery theatrical rococo style. The highly ornamented interior that includes plaster caryatids, cherubs and curlicues, and gilded classical Greek motifs that include lyres, horns, harps, acanthus leaves, dancing cupids, and theatre masks.

The outside has been created with a neo-classical look. Columns or the column like structure is displayed over the front of the theatre. The design relating back to the Parthenon with its bold square look and raised triangular roof imbedded on each side of the front of the building. White designed it to be symmetrical giving it a high standard finish.

The St james theatre was near the first of theatres that White employed the ‘semi-cantilever’ system.  A system of where columns would not be situated throughout the theatres but well back. He quotes the reason of this in a general discussion:  “ ‘How often do you hear someone say? Oh, I had a bad seat just behind one of those wretched pillars. That is wrong, the perfect theatre should have no pillars.”

DSDN 171 - Curatorial

“Your best work is your expression of yourself. Now, you may not be the greatest at it, but when you do it. You’re the only expert.” –Frank Gehry explains this quote that ties into the work of the fluid model  as it may not be the greatest, but ideas pulled from precedents to form an expression of yourself with in the design of the model.

In the Fluid form model that has been designed, it links and corresponds with the precedent artists by the names of Wassily Kandinsky and Frank Gehry. The model displays elements and certain features of their design work. Elegant flowing curved lines are enriched in the model, from how the architect Frank Gehry has displayed the curves in his buildings. He has designed with sheets of metal bent and twisted over to form unique abstracted shapes that capture viewers’ eyes.

The fluid form model bends and twists being bound in place by geometric shaped thread. The curves being repetitive link to Kandinskys use of a series of parallel lines in his painting. All curves are at the same width and length with the same amount of spacing between each one leading up to individual points where each one is bounded together with black thread in a triangular shape. The contrast in colours and use of material is simple with it gloss on one side and matt on the other. Being white it reflects light in different ways and produces unique abstracted shadows. It helps to capture its viewers as if it is one of Gehry’s architectural structures.
